DC Bill of Rights

  1. All Rights Promised by the US Constitution

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia should have the rights allotted to us by the Constitution of the United States.

  2. Right to Democracy

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to a full vote in local and national elections. The District of Columbia should have the powers of all other states in the union, approving its own budget and electing full voting representatives to the US Congress based on its population.

  3. Right to Jobs

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to a job at a livable wage, the freedom to form/join unions, the right to affirmative action programs and other aggressive measures to ensure full access to jobs, training, apprenticeship programs, and general recruitment and retention within the city borders.

  4. Right to Peace

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to live in peace at home and with the people of the world-including but not limited to the right to military-free schools and the right to live free of police intimidation and violence.

  5. Right to Housing

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to quality, affordable housing, drug-free communities, and equality in lending/zoning practices. DC residents should have the right to long-term, secure housing-free from fear of displacement due to gentrification.

  6. Right to Health Care

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to free, quality public health care - including but not limited to full access to reproductive health care, drug recovery programs, and other risk reduction programs.

  7. Right to Education

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to free fully funded quality education from nursery to university that gives youth and active voice in decisions related to our schools and promotes affirmative action-equality in recruitment and retention programs. We believe this includes but is not limited to better funding and efficiency within our public school system and our public university, the University of the District of Columbia.

  8. Right to Leisure

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to recreation, art, cultural activities, and sports through publicly funded parks, community centers, museums, and neighborhood athletics programs.

  9. Right to a Healthy Environment

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to a healthy, clean and sustainable environment, food and water. We believe in publicly funding the cleaning and maintenance of our rivers, recycling, and zoning practices that prevent neighborhoods from coming into contact with waste dumping sites.

  10. Right to Equality

We believe that all residents of the District of Columbia have the right to self-determination and full equality in all aspects of life.
